The Totley railway tunnel runs for 3.5 miles (5.7 km) under Totley Moor. It carries the Hope Valley railway from Sheffield out to Grindleford (here) before it continues past Hathersage towards Edale and Manchester.
Work began on the tunnel in 1888 and was finished in 1892. The first passenger trains used the tunnel in 1894. At the time of construction it was the second longest railway tunnel in the UK, but it's now the fourth.
