The Labante Caves were formed thanks to the river coming from the San Cristoforo spring, which forms a small waterfall here. The spring has an average summer flow rate of around 11 liters per second and is used as a water and drinking supply. The San Cristoforo spring was discovered at the end of the 19th century and since 1986 it has also been used to power the aqueduct that supplies the municipalities of Castel d'Aiano and Vergato.
