The Himmelmoor Peat Railway was built around 1900 to transport peat from the mining area in Himmelmoor to the peat works on the eastern edge of the moor. The connecting line, opened in 1899 and running along this line from the peat works to the peat factory at Quickborn station, was closed in 1970. The route of the Peat Railway has been continually adapted to the mining areas over the years. The railway is still in operation today, although since the end of mining in 2018, it has been used for historic tours on a five-kilometer section preserved and maintained by the Himmelmoor Peat Railway Association.
