In order to give the residents of the Haas district a more convenient option for Sunday services and to save them the long journey to St. Nicholas on the market square, construction of a chapel "on the Düvelscheid" began in 1692, roughly at the same place where the youth center is today the St. Josef parish stands. However, the construction could not be completed for no longer apparent reasons; it was eventually removed again. After much effort, the ecclesiastical authorities decided in 1712 to build the planned chapel in the Bergviertel and to replace the 15th-century chapel with a larger building. Since all residents of the Bergviertel were contractually obliged to build and maintain the new church, the work was completed in a very short time. As early as 1729, the building, which was too small, had to be enlarged by a yoke to the west. A radical transformation and elaboration "in the Romanesque style" took place between 1867 and 1882.

On the portal of the chapel there are coats of arms that were only made as part of the chapel expansion in 1879, but show the coats of arms in memory of the sponsors of the old chapel Wilhelm Heinrich von Berghe, called Trips (1661-1736) and his wife Franziska Arnoldine Schyl von Walhorn of the Berghe and Schyl family. The lines: "JESU MARIA JOSEPH - RAEDIFICATVM ANNO 1712." and "ANNO 1599 ANTIQVVM RENOVATVM ET DILATATVM EST Anno 1712-1729" are engraved on the inscription stone, which on the one hand proves the new building as well as a reference to the first chapel from the year was made in 1599.

Saint John the Baptist (also John the Baptist), to whom the Eupen "mountain chapel" is dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. His parents are Zechariah and Elisabeth. After the proclamation of God's incarnation, the Mother of God visits her relative Elisabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, John the Baptist. This is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner / pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches the repentance of sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan, where Jesus also comes to be baptized, being filled with the Holy Spirit that descends on him from heaven.
The memorial day of Saint John the Baptist (Baptist) in the calendar of saints is on June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.
