Riedmiller, Bernhard (1757-1832), innkeeper and state defender, Bludenz
Riedmiller Bernhard, innkeeper and state defender. * Illerbachen b. Memmingen, Bavaria (FRG), June 5, 1757; † Vienna, January 11, 1832. Son of a wealthy farmer; owned the Gasthof Krone in Bludenz (Vorarlberg) from 1789 to 1809. In 1796 he became captain of the Bludenzer Rifle Company and took part in the defensive battles against the French and their allies in the coalition wars. He particularly distinguished himself in 1799, when the Vorarlberg Landsturm, together with the Austrian military, defeated a multiple of the French. Superior strength near Feldkirch forced them to retreat. In 1809, R. was appointed by the state parliament as one of the eight men who were supposed to organize the national defense. Despite some successful military Actions – e.g. Partly under his command - he had to leave for Tyrol. He took part in the third Battle of Bergisel on August 13th, 1809 and was appointed by Hofer to the command in the Upper Inn Valley on September 1st. After the resistance collapsed, R. initially fled to Switzerland, but soon went to Vienna, where he received a k. received pension. R. was in the last years of his life because of the distribution of English. Support money to war-damaged Tyroleans and Vorarlbergers in difficulty - apparently wrongly so.
