The square is also a central location for various events and markets that take place throughout the year. Especially at Christmas time, the Alter Markt is transformed into a festive Christmas market that creates a special atmosphere with its lights and stalls.

Today the square looks as sophisticated as it did 100 years ago. A miniature boulevard, with a central reservation lined with plane trees and a war memorial for those who died in the wars of unification. Boule players have been bringing French flair to the square since 2006. Players are welcome.
