Thalkirchen is particularly scenically situated on the "Rain", a high terrace above the Ache. In 1080 it was first mentioned in a document as "Talchirchin". In 1160 the Talchirchin estate was placed under the Baumburg monastery by Arnold, a ministerial of Count Gebhard von Sulzbach. Later it came into the possession of the Hirnsberg-Aschauer. There were only the two courtyards on the Rain and the little church next to them. It was built around 1100 and is to be regarded as the original church of the whole area, even older than Hirnsberg with its Marienkapelle in the castle.
