The varied landscape of wetlands and dry areas, woodland, grasslands, reeds and open water is a unique habitat for many animal and plant species such as rabbits, squirrels, frogs, salamanders, woodpeckers and birds of prey.
The natural beauty of the Amsterdamse Bos can be roughly divided into the following areas:
-the Schinkelbos (with grazing Scottish Highland Cows)
-the Southern Oeverlanden (habitat of marsh harrier)
-the Oeverlanden Amstelveense Poel (attention birdwatchers: here you will find bugs, warblers and sometimes even Savi's Warbler; buzzards, hawks and sparrowhawks will keep your natural balance and you will also find wild orchids and other rare plants)
-Vogeleland (bird island, home to many unusual plant and butterfly species)
and the Meerzicht Polder (which houses meadow flowers and typical Dutch meadow birds such as redshank, black-tailed godwit and lapwing).
