In 1999 the old round village of Westerrade in Schleswig-Holstein celebrated its 750th birthday with its 8 hooves. The syllable "... rade" shows that land was cleared and the people settled here. The municipal coat of arms created in 1984 shows this very clearly: In the upper part of the heron with a fish in its beak pointing to the nearby Wardersee with its damp foreland, in the middle the Strukau dividing the village and in the lower part the cleared tree stump with the freshly knocking branches representing the fertility of the soil.
The village was first mentioned in 1249. Count Johann von Holstein had pledged Westerrade to Bishop Adalbert von Lübeck for a loan of 300 marks granted to him. The Westerrader Hufner were free farmers at all times, i.e. they were not subordinate to the estate (Pronstorf), but directly subordinate to the king and had to pay their taxes (taxes) to them. The farmers in Westerrad had an average of 50 hectares to cultivate. According to the old Germanic hoof constitution, the field mark was divided up in the form of `` Gewannen / Kämpen '' and consisted of equally large and good parts of arable land, equal shares of the community property of the village, the pasture / Almende, the waters and the bush pasture.
