Joint government with Rudolf until 1319. 1314 simultaneous election of Ludwig and (his cousin) Frederick the Fair as king.
Decision: Battle of Mühldorf in 1322.
Dispute with Pope John XXII, who wanted to reserve the right to decide on the succession to the throne. 1324 excommunication. Ban and interdict on the empire due to collaboration with the heretic Matteo Visconti from Milan.
Many do not keep the ban, Ludwig has a special connection to the Minorites and to cities.
Reconciliation with Frederick the Fair, makes him co-regent in the empire. 1328 Imperial coronation in Rome (anointing by two bishops, coronation by Sciarra Colonna, consecration by a bishop).
