The last brewery in Amersfoort, the Phoenix Brewery, lasted a long time, but had to close its gates in 1969. Twenty years later, the brothers Johan and Marinus Korthals-Altes, ex-director-owners of the Phoenix Brewery, took the initiative to establish another brewery in Amersfoort. They were of the opinion that the old brewing city of Amersfoort was still missing a lot and founded the 'De Vriendenring Der Amersfoortsche Bierbrouwerij De Drie Ringen' foundation and in 1989 the new Amersfoortsche Bierbrouwerij De Drie Ringen opened its doors. The Drie Ringen Brouwerij takes its name from one of the breweries that Amersfoort was rich in the seventeenth century. The original plaque of this family business (dating from 1626) has been preserved. But that's not all that has survived. The current brewery still brews the beer from then under the name 'Vuurvogel'. And that is definitely worth a try!
