These rocks are a scenic highlight in the Altmühltal Nature Park. From the bike path you can see the impressive rock formation, the Twelve Apostles, standing vertically on the river bank.

The rock towers are made of sponge limestone, a type of rock that weathers harder than the surrounding White Jura. Because of this, the Twelve Apostles have carved out of the surrounding sloping slopes over the years and can be seen today as this beautiful rock formation.

The geological subsurface of the "Twelve Apostles" is formed by the thick layered limestone of the Treuchtlinger marble, a type of rock from the White Jura. At the thresholds of the White Jurassic Sea, so-called "sponge limestones" developed as a geological feature. They are more difficult to weather and were therefore carved out as rocks.

Great resting place with a bench

One of the scenic highlights in the Altmühltal Nature Park is the "Twelve Apostles" rock group. The towering dolomite rocks between Solnhofen and Eßlingen greet boaters on the Altmühl, cyclists on the Altmühltal cycle path and hikers on their tours around Solnhofen.
