The marina is named after Captain Robert Hilgendorf. It took its name from one of the most outstanding captains of the sailing ship era, who was born in 1852 near Stepnica. He became famous for circumnavigating Cape Horn under sail as many as 66 times. This record has never been broken. To preserve the memory of Hilgendorf, in 2015 the Stepnica marina was named after him.
