Carob (χαρούπι) usually means carob in German (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannisbrotbaum). It's booming recently because locust bean gum is being added to all sorts of diets and slimming products. What remains when it is extracted is the sweet actual fruit "flesh", which is processed into all kinds of products on Crete by hand, from noodles to rusks to syrup, but is also still used as animal feed.
