The "Association for the Organization of Art Exhibitions" has been in existence in Düsseldorf for well over a hundred years now. Founded by committed artists in 1898, it was conceived as an exhibition company and since then has repeatedly implemented appealing projects through contacts with citizens, business and politics.

This was also the case for the seven-hundredth anniversary of the city's foundation in the summer of 1988. Under the motto "Sculpture D-88", forty artists were invited to place sculptures on an imaginary axis and to connect the old town, the academy and the museum complex at the Ehrenhof. Some of these works have been preserved at their locations or have been re-erected.

The Düsseldorf sculptor Ernst Hesse was looking for a quiet spot in 1988 for his floor work, to which the sculptor remarks: "It should serve as a place of retreat where you can reflect and recharge your batteries." This names a characteristic of Hesse's work, which the art historian Krempel describes as follows: "Ernst Hesse understands sculptural work as a communication process in which the human being is present as a sculptor, but also as an observer and thinking person." Twenty years later, after a restoration that has now become necessary, the work is back in its original location.
