The Franzensfeste was named from 1833 to 1838 and after Emperor Franz I of Austria. It should secure the important transalpine traffic connection through the Wipptal over the Brenner to the north. It is considered the only pure example of the New Prussian fortification art on Austro-Hungarian soil.
