At the extreme end of the Finistère stands the statue of Our Lady of the Shipwrecked. It was made of Carrara marble by Cyprian Godebski in 1903. With the child in her arms, she turns to a shipwrecked man crouching at her feet.

Notre-Dame des Naufragés is a sculpture by Cyprien Godebski made in 1904 and located at the Pointe du Raz in Plogoff (Finistère), on land granted free of charge by an inhabitant of the parish of Plogoff, Mr. Yves Kersaudy, residing in Lescoff. The Maritime Prefecture of Brest had granted its authorization on April 8, 1901. The statue was put in place on Saturday June 19, 1904. (Wikipedia)

In this exposed location at the Pointe du Raz, with a clear view of the sea and of course also easy to see from there, a statue of the Mother of God Mary has been erected here. A small "holy precinct" has been set up around the Madonna's monument, with a low wall separating the surrounding area from it. The dynamic, perhaps even baroque, figure of the Virgin Mary rises on a brick base.

The dedication "Notre-Dame des Naufrages", i.e. "Our Lady of the Shipwrecked", makes it clear why a place by the sea was chosen for this. Many sailors will have dedicated an “Ava Maria, gratia plena” to her as they left their ship for a happy return home.
