Where our church stands today, there used to be a monastery complex with an associated chapel. In 1497 this chapel was converted into a church in the Gothic style. Since then, it has given the place a striking silhouette, visible from afar. The tower with its strikingly high peak was used as a defense and observation tower at the time of the 30 Years War. Various changes were made to the design of the nave. In 1696 the first extensive renovation of the church was carried out.
