One of the most well-known poachers of the Spessart is to this day certainly Johann Adam Hasenstab, which in 1773 in Kropfbachtal by predator forester Sator came to life. Less famous is his Partensteiner namesake, who also died as a poacher from the bullet of a forest ranger - on Corpus Christi 90 years ago.

Poaching in olden times was probably more of a livelihood than an unbridled illegal hunting passion. The forests in the Spessart were in the hands of a few noble houses and the church. The amount of game in the vast Spessart forests was in no relation to what the nobility and the church could consume or sell to the well-to-do. That is why "daredevil men" who did not fear for life and limb felt challenged to rebel against the nobility and the church by taking a few pieces of game from the stock for their own use - as one would say discreetly today. The common people always stood on the side of the poachers. Their greatest enemies were the forester employed by the nobility and the church, whose job it was to arrest and arrest poachers. The skirmishes between foresters and poachers are known to have resulted in deaths on both sides.
