In 1381, Archbishop Friedrich, Count of Saarwerden, authorized the construction of a chapel in honor of the Holy Trinity and the Mother of God. St. Michael is not mentioned as a patron until 1419. When Wachtendonk was pledged to John of Cleves, the parish rights were transferred from the Church of St. Sebastianus in Geisseren to this chapel in the town of Wachtendonk (1449).
The reconstruction after the great town fire at the beginning of the 18th century was carried out with the assistance of the Lady of Wachtendonk, Dorothea Princess of Dietrichstein, née Princess of Salm-Salm. The spire is the work of Peter Vorsterman of Sevenum (1710). The Lucia Chapel was rebuilt by the de Cabanes family at Holtheyde House. The high altar was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Scheifes in 1932. The parish church was extensively renovated in 1873, 1905, and from 1972 to 1977.
