South Tyrol (Italian: Alto Adige, Sudtirolo; Ladin: South Tyrol), officially the autonomous province of Bozen – South Tyrol, is the northernmost province in Italy and, together with the province of Trento, forms the autonomous region of Trentino-South Tyrol. Since the expanded autonomy came into force in 1972, South Tyrol has enjoyed comprehensive self-government rights and is accordingly referred to as an "autonomous province" or "state". The area in the middle of the Alps has around 530,000 inhabitants, its capital is Bolzano.
