Gurre Castle was probably built at the end of the 12th century as a defense tower on a small island in Lake Gurre. The word Gurre actually means swamp or moor. At that time the lake was much bigger than today.
In the middle of the 14th century, King Valdemar Atterdag built a ring wall with four corner towers.
The entire complex was used until the 16th century. After that, the fortress was used as a quarry.
