The first steamship connection to Faaborg was established in 1903. In the following years, the harbor was further deepened and an improved berth for the ferries was built. A small workshop for ship engines developed into a shipyard for the construction of fishing boats with around 30 employees around 1950. Today, Søby Harbor can accommodate ships with a maximum length of 135 m and a draft of 6.5 m. The shipyard (Søby Værft) is the largest employer on the island of Ærø with around 140 employees.
