The cradle of the municipality of Grobbendonk, originally called Ouwen, was in the hamlet of Boshoven, in the north of the municipality. In 1957 remains of a Romanesque, three-aisled church with a square choir, very important for the Campine, were found near the site of the current chapel, as well as the remains of the very first church in Ouwen, a pre-Romanesque church made of wood or clay; below, furthermore, traces of a Merovingian burial field were found.

The church, which was later rebuilt in Gothic style, was completely dismantled in 1721, because from 1718 the parish services took place in the chapel of the almshouse, see Schransstraat; the stones were reused for the creation of other structures. Out of respect for the ancient sacred character, a chapel was built on the site of the choir.
