Refuge with great views for the well-kept rest. ;-)

The refuge is on the cultural hiking trail, this is station 9, Weinberg Celtic path. The vineyard is a petrified coral reef. If we add up the outline of this former limestone mine again, we can imagine how mighty this mountain once was. The remains of an old Celtic refugee castle have been found on the summit, a ring wall three to five meters high with a ditch around the outside. In such complexes the community gathered in times of danger with property (livestock). Later in the early Middle Ages, a residential tower was built in this fortress. Excavations have shown that it was a residence of a nobleman, the first Kerpen castle! Going back much further in history, around 390 million years ago, the landscape here was very different. Instead of land there was sea. A strait of sea stretched here from southern England to Poland. This area was currently south of the equator and was tropically warm. The sea was shallow and the clear water is rich in marine fauna, a community of coral reef-forming animals.
