In 1666 the plague raged in the Baden region, but the population of Mingolsheim was spared. After the danger of the plague had survived safely, in 1667 the Kislauer Fauth Johann Hetzrodt had the first chapel built by forced labor together with Mingolsheim citizens. It was named after Saint Rochus, who is both the patron saint of plague sufferers and the local patron of the community of Mingolsheim. Soon afterwards, on Rochustag, an ever larger pilgrimage from the surrounding communities began. The Rochus pilgrimages were further stimulated by Pope Benedict XIV's certificate of indulgence on April 2, 1742.
