Its capacity is around 8.8 million cubic meters of water and the arch dam is 120 meters high. The maximum depth of the reservoir is 104 meters and it has an area of 21 hectares (about 29 football pitches) and was completed in 1967. It is fed by meltwater from the Great Aletsch Glacier and other mountain streams. The special feature of the Gibidum reservoir is that around 65% of its catchment area is glaciated. The water is therefore rich in sediments, which leads to severe wear and tear on the turbine wheels of the power plant. For this reason, the entire reservoir is flushed annually.
