Best Hikes to Port de Vénasque / Puerto de Benasque
Tips
  • The port of Vénasque, or “puerto de Benasque” in Spanish, is a pass in the Pyrenees located on the Franco-Spanish border. Culminating at 2,444 meters above sea level, it separates the Pique valley to the north and the Esera valley to the south.

Its small rocky passage nestles between the Mine and the Pic de Sauvegarde. The panorama is absolutely magnificent, both on the French and Spanish sides.

  • A highly recommended and beautiful hike. The Port de Venasque is a mountain pass in the Pyrenees. It is located on the border between France and Spain and is a popular border crossing point for mountaineers and walkers. It can be reached in about two to three hours from the Hospice de France, south of Bagnères-de-Luchon in France. This port connected the Benasque valley in Spain with the Glère de Luchón valley in France.

On both slopes, there were two hospitals, that of Saint Jean de Jouéou on the French side at 1,005 m.a.s.l. called hospice, and the old hospital of Benasque located at the foot of the port of Glera on the Spanish slope at 1,775 m.a.s.l.

  • A wonderful hike. Left in the fog, we walk, walk and walk again in order to overcome the clouds.
After a 15-minute downpour, here we are finally beyond the clouds under a magnificent sun that will allow us to finish our ascent to the summit.
THE last climb is difficult but still accessible. Arrived at the top, a magnificent view opens up to us, located between France and Spain, we contemplate this magnificent landscape and nature. We will take our lunch break before starting the return descent.
Plan a k-way in case of rain and above all enjoy the view ^_^

  • Transition to France to the Refuge Le Venasce with the monument Evades de France 1942-1945.
After crossing the Port de Benasque you first come to the lakes Boum de Venasque and the Refuge de Venasque at the 3rd lake.
