The dominant dome, the sweeping façade, the double towers, and the palatial side wings are the eye-catchers of Makartplatz.
The unusual, inward-curving Baroque façade of the church, built between 1694 and 1702, is striking. It was the first sacred building by the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, with which he created a Baroque Gesamtkunstwerk. The building is flanked by the seminary and the Virgilianum, a foundation for poor young men. Other well-known Baroque painters and sculptors contributed to the interior design, including Johann Michael Rottmayr, who created the dome fresco.
