The sheer walls of Croghaun form the northwestern end of Achill Island. At 664 metres, the northern foothills of the mountain form the highest cliffs in Ireland and the third highest in Europe. The ascent from the east is steep and sweaty, but the views from the top of the Keem beach, to the east over the interior of the island and especially to the cliff-studded headland in the far west are bombastic.
