The interior of the Catholic parish church of St. Afra has a plastered hall with a retracted, polygonal closed choir. From 1753 to 1755 it was decorated with ceiling paintings by Johann Caspar Bagnato. In 1924 after there was an extension to the northwest by Wilhelm Laur.

Up to 1507 Obernheim was parish in the church of Nusplingen. There was only one chaplaincy on site. Due to the legacy of Katharina Urachin nee Sutter in 1484, who donated her farm with fields in Obernheim for an eternal mass after her death, it was possible to make the previously undoped chaplaincy independent. This wish of the deceased was probably granted on the occasion of their death in 1507 by the episcopal side. At that time the insignificant town of Obernheim owned a small church with a tower, on the foundation walls of which today's church tower is built.

The original church tower was raised after 1792 and a high pitched roof was added in 1899, thus reaching the stately height of 54 m. This structure, which has been attached transversely to the previous nave, made it possible to transform the previous main building into a spacious choir room. The high altar was housed in a small choir annex. In this way, the baroque gem of Bagnato was preserved.

Over the course of the last century, the church has been repeatedly adapted to the requirements of the liturgy through restorations and structural renovations and has been preserved as a monument. The last interior renovation took place on the church jubilee in 2007.

Two nativity scenes are set up during the Christmas season: The older one was carved around 1914 and restored a few years ago. Every year on Thanksgiving, a large carpet made of basic foodstuffs, which predominantly comes from local nature, is laid out in the aisle. With great attention to detail, Christian motifs are presented as works of art that are well worth seeing.
