Sculpture of steel plate painted black on a brick base.

Under the title Jip and Janneke, Annie M.G. Schmidt various children's stories. The stories, which appeared as weekly episodes in the daily newspaper Het Parool, are about the daily lives of two neighbours: Jip and Janneke. They experience all kinds of things: they celebrate their birthday, stamp in the rain puddles, visit grandma, make a jigsaw puzzle and do the doll's laundry. The dog Takkie and the cat Siepie are important secondary characters.

The stories were illustrated by another regular Parool employee: Fiep Westendorp. Schmidt's habit of finishing her work just before the deadline regularly led to practical problems.

The figurine was made in honor of the fact that artist Fiep Westendorp was born in Zaltbommel. It was unveiled on October 10, 1992 by Annie MG Schmidt and Fiep Westendorp (1916-2004), who was born in Zaltbommel.
