It is a stone cross on an elevation near Astorga, from which you can see the towns of San Justo de la Vega and, a little further, Astorga. Santo Toribio was an Astorgan bishop of the 5th century. It was precisely in this place where the Saint dusted off his sandals when he left his diocese, sad and slandered.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what prompted people to erect “their” cross at this point. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our life as it was in the life of Jesus.

So I wish that many people … visit the crosses, whether as places of stillness and breathing space before God, whether as places for community gatherings, prayer and praise to God.”

The Crucero de Santo Toribio is a natural viewpoint located in San Justo de la Vega, about five kilometers before reaching Astorga, León. From this point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city of Astorga and the Montes de León.

Legend has it that Santo Toribio, bishop of Astorga in the 5th century, stopped at this place when he was forced to leave the city. Looking towards Astorga for the last time, he shook his sandals and exclaimed: "From Astorga, not even the dust." Later, the city named him its patron saint. 🌄⛪
