This representation of the cross refers to the sacred five wounds of Jesus: the stigmata on the hands and feet, the crown of thorns on the head and the heart pierced by the lance of Longinus. As usual, there is the inscription INRI (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum) on the extended cross post and the skull with an inscription at the foot of the cross. The veneration of the holy five wounds goes back to the Bible passage 'through your wounds we are healed' in Isaiah 53.5 and should protect against an unforeseen death.
