As you come around the last bend of the river before Besancon, the view across the river is dominated by the large fortress towering above the city in a tight horseshoe bend peninsula, cut by the river over millions of years. Incidentally, in the cliffs above this location is the Grotte Saint-Leonard, worth climbing up and hiking to if there is time. Directly across the river are the ugly more recent ruins of a huge bankrupt factory.
