The upper course called Schmelzbach has its source a good 5km north of the Zirbitzkogel, which at 2396 m above sea level. A. highest peak of the Seetal Alps, and already occupies a water-rich catchment area of about 30-40 km². The stream first flows eastwards, then in a ditch that begins below the mountain village of Sankt Wolfgang-Kienberg, and now southeast past the long Granitzen via Rötsch to the local area of Obdach. A little north-west of the Obdach saddle, the course of the river turns north, passes Deixelberg and Eppenstein Castle, and finally reaches the upper Mur valley near Weißkirchen. This is where the now stately body of water flows into the Mur at Zeltweg.
