The Theodor Heuss Bridge (formerly Friedrichsbrücke) is one of Heidelberg's four road bridges over the Neckar. It is the central bridge in the center of Heidelberg and connects the western end of Heidelberg's old town at Bismarckplatz on the southern bank of the Neckar with the district of Neuenheim on the northern bank. The bridge is important in terms of traffic because the B 3 is routed over it.
The Theodor Heuss Bridge in its current form was completed in 1992. However, the history of its predecessors can be traced back to the year 1877, when the "Friedrichsbrücke" standing on the same spot was inaugurated.
In the section of the river where today's Theodor-Heuss-Bridge stands, there has long been a key point for crossing the Neckar. Approximately 300 m downstream of today's bridge construction there was an old Neckar ford, which was already used in prehistoric times to cross the Neckar. At the same place, the Romans built the first bridge over the Neckar in the Heidelberg area in 80/90. In 1217, a ferry across the Neckar is documented in the same section of the river.
