The Strijbeekse Heide is located between the Strijbeekse and Chaamse Beek, close to the Belgian border. The area is located on higher sandy soils. Around 1900, the Strijbeekse Heide still consisted of wet and dry heathland with fens, wet lowlands and a few free-standing conifers (fly pines). In the first half of the twentieth century, the landscape changed significantly. Large areas of heathland were reclaimed for agriculture and forestry.
