A new monument was unveiled on Thursday 19 September 2019 at the Reijerscamp in the Wolfheze nature reserve. It is a memorial to Flight Lieutenant David Lord VC DFC and the crew of an RAF Dakota, who died here 75 years ago. The unveiling was done by Lucinda Lord, David Lord's niece, and veteran Ron Johnson.

Born in Ireland, David Lord was a pilot with the 271st squadron of the Royal Air Force. During the Battle of Arnhem, he flew as a pilot one of the Dakota transport planes that were responsible for supplying the British airbornes in Oosterbeek on Tuesday 19 September 1944.

At an altitude of 500 meters near Nijmegen, David Lord's plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire. As a result, the right engine of the aircraft caught fire.

David Lord was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross, Britain's highest military award, for his heroic attempt to complete his resupply flight 75 years earlier despite his plane being on fire.

      Historic site Reijerscamp Wolfheze

Reijerscamp is a nature reserve near Wolfheze in Gelderland. During the Second World War, large-scale airborne landings took place here during Operation Market Garden. Natuurmonumenten has facilitated the realization of the monument in collaboration with historian Theo van Middelkoop, the Market Garden Foundation and the Municipality of Renkum. The memorial stone is located on the viewpoint of the Reijerscamp nature reserve on the German camp road in Wolfheze. A new information board marks the history of Reijerscamp.
