This trullo is one of my favorites because it has this adorable "tuft of hair." The view of the Rhine plain towards the southern Bergstrasse, Odenwald and Vorderpfalz is also beautiful. The trulli served as protection from rain and sudden thunderstorms for the vineyard workers and provided shade. This was the place where they took a break and ate the lunch they had brought with them.

The origin of the trulli is attributed to Italian migrant workers from Apulia and Lombardy, who brought the knowledge to build these buildings with them in the 18th century. However, this is not historically proven. Later, they were also rebuilt by local craft businesses. They are mainly found in Rheinhessen, but some are also found in the Bockenheim an der Weinstraße area. From the location of this trullo, you have a wonderful view over the Vorderpfalz to the Odenwald, as well as to Ludwigshafen, Mannheim and Heidelberg.

The explanation of "norberts" (November 1st, 2017) with the "Italian migrant workers who brought architecture with them" is a variant that persistently circulates in Rheinhessen and the Palatinate, but is not correct. All information about the trullo (singular) / trulli (plural) can be found here: trullo-radwanderung.de/der-trullo
