In the sixteenth century, Bowlespark in Wageningen housed Wageningen Castle, which was built in 1526 by the Duke of Guelders in the southeast corner of the city. The castle played an important role in the struggle for the independence of the Duchy. In 2015, the sewage system in the area had to be replaced and during the archaeological supervision, parts of the eastern and western castle walls were found that were built around 1526. Parts of the north wall, the northeast tower and one of the gate towers had already been examined and made visible earlier.
