On the high plateau along the road between Effelder and Meilschnitz, the red sandstone is visible through cracks and individual rocks. One of the boulders right on this road is the "Krumme Stein". It was first mentioned in a boundary description in 1378 as a natural boundary between the courts of Schalkau and Neustadt. This mighty, irregular sandstone block is about 3 m wide on the street side and was a striking landmark of the state borders until the founding of the two German states. The name of this boundary sign is derived from the irregular shape or from grimmen / kkrmen (»it crooks me«).
The stone is located on a large parking lot for hikers with a rest area.
