Opened in 1923 and currently seating around 63,000 fans for football, Memorial Stadium was funded from public contributions, as a memorial to Californians who lost their lives in World War I (1917–18). It has been named one of the top college football stadiums and was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2006 with the neoclassical motif of its unique architecture.
