At the beginning of the late Middle Ages around 1290, the residence of a petty aristocrat or a farmhouse may have stood on the site of the castle. The owner paid interest to the Kindberg lordship. In 1346 Hans Liechtenecker is mentioned as the owner, but it was not until 1395 that his grandson of the same name, as a member of the lower nobility, received permission to expand the farm or residence into a castle.

Since 1932, and especially since 1958, the castle association, which is also the owner of the castle, has been maintaining it. From 1980 to 1990 the local history museum was built in the keep. There is also a restaurant in the castle, from the terrace you have a beautiful view of the valley.
