The Esselbach parish church was built in 1779 according to the plans of Emanuel Joseph von Herigoyen. He was also the architect of the old church in Sulzbach am Main (see the cultural trail "Around the Buchenmühle"). The native Portuguese was court architect of the Elector of Mainz, Friedrich Carl Joseph von Erthal, and a pioneer of classicism in southern Germany. Herigoyen remembered his knowledge of French architecture and chose a pyramid roof with a lantern on the three-story facade tower for the Esselbach parish church. During the construction, he made some changes to the building plan.
