The structure is often called Roman, however the current construction dates back to the Medieval Period, and there are even those who claim that it is contemporary with the construction of the Convent of Mafra, having been rebuilt over a previous Roman building. In fact, this is a region rich in archaeological remains dating from the period of Roman occupation of the territory.
