Argenschwang is located in southern Hunsrück, at the foot of the Geisberg. The tiny town, first mentioned in 1127, has only a few inhabitants. But for many centuries the castle above the village was an important hub of the area.

The village also benefited from this. You can still see the former synagogue and several old houses from the 18th century. And of course the church. The neo-Gothic quarry stone building was completed in 1883 and is well worth a visit. Despite the renovations that have taken place in the meantime, the interior and exterior of the church have been largely preserved and can therefore be viewed in their original state today.

Since the 17th century, religious services have been held in Argenschwang, a branch of the evangelical community in Gebroth, on occasional occasions and on high holidays. The Argenschwang castle chapel served as the church in Argenschwang, but it was destroyed at the end of the 18th century.

Only after the completion of the new church in 1882, for which the Kreuznach master builder Carl Wilhelm Hartmann drew up the plans, did regular services resume.

However, the founding of an independent community in Argenschwang did not take place.

For the new church in Argenschwang, Carl Wilhelm Hartmann designed a simple hall church with an almost square floor plan. On the eastern side of the building there was a recessed rectangular choir with its own roof. The west side on the opposite side was closed off by a structure that was also drawn in. Integrated into the main roof, this accommodated the vestibule and a small vestibule with the gallery staircase. A trained bell tower was missing. A diagonal roof tower on the west side of the church assumed its function. The rising masonry consisted of unplastered rubble and house stones. Stylistically, the new church building showed neo-Gothic elements in the individual forms. The sacristy on the south side of the chancel is more recent.

Inside the church, a central aisle led from the vestibule to the altar in the choir room. The octagonal neo-Gothic pulpit stood on the north-east side of the triumphal arch. The congregational pews made of straight transverse benches were arranged to the right and left of the central aisle and reached to the outer walls.

A transverse gallery on the west side of the building, which also offered space for a small organ, accommodated additional seating.

The exterior architecture of the protestant church in Argenschwang still largely represents the original state after extensive renovation.

Despite a series of renovations, the interior of the church has retained the spatial concept of the time it was built.

Inside is an organ from 1885 by the Oberlinger brothers from Windesheim.

The bells date from 1883 and were cast by the Klaren bell foundry in Bonn.
