There was already a church here in the 13th century. Today's fieldstone building dates from the 15th/16th century. Century; the choir room and the tower shaft were added in the 17th century. In 1740 the curved tower dome was added. The nave received a vaulted wooden barrel ceiling in 1836, on which the well-known starry sky was painted at the beginning of the 20th century. There was initially a medieval altar in the church, of which six carved figures still remain in the church. The church also became famous thanks to the painter Lyonel Feininger. She was one of his most popular subjects. In addition to church services, the church is used for the Benz Church Summer events and for many other concerts.
