The Ems River has been gradually being renaturalized since the 1980s. This allows nature to recover, which naturally has a positive impact on local biodiversity. The reason for the renaturalization is that, starting in the 19th century, with the growth of agriculture, repeated attempts were made to straighten the river. However, this only led to increased problems such as flooding and, later, groundwater depletion. Therefore, a comprehensive renaturalization plan was developed and gradually implemented.
