Hollenberg Castle was built by Emperor Charles IV in the middle of the 14th century. During the war between the Bohemian King Wenzel and the Palatine King Ruprecht the castle was taken and damaged several times. Even after that, the castle changed hands several times until it was destroyed in the Peasants' War in 1525. Since then, the ruin decays. The castle ruin is freely accessible and in addition to some remnants of the wall, above all the great view from the upper castle is worth a visit.

Below the castle you will find the 97 meter deep dwarf cave. The cave consists of two parallel columns. The two courses are quite narrow and connected in several places. Here you should definitely have a flashlight with you.

The castle ruins are easy to miss. Exactly halfway from Pegnitz to Pottenstein, it gives an impression of former power and grace. Below, in the municipality of Hollenberg, a beer garden awaits you as a mid-way station. From there, it's just a leisurely downhill walk towards the pearl of Franconian Switzerland, which is easy to manage even with small children over a total of 6 kilometers. 🥾🧭
